For a Year 12 induction trip, we all went to London to visit the museums and watch Matilda the Musical. But let me tell you something, I was not ready for this musical 😮
From start to finish the musical constantly amazed me and never failed to impress; every single second got me fully engaged and I honestly can’t remember the last time I had lost myself so deeply in a different world like that. It was truly breath taking – from the production value to the lighting and staging and props and actors and music and dancing and just the general effort and vibe I gained from it was actually overwhelming.
To begin with, the director was incredible at adapting the actual story of Matilda into a play, ensuring the the key scenes were included and that nothing was drastically changed. I also noticed the cast was well chosen, I think that each actor/actress truly brought their characters to life. I don’t seem to understand how these young children are capable of such a high demanding script – their ability to act, sing, dance and learn the choreography and where to go off stage etc, I mean I found it hard to memorize my lines let alone any of what they did when I had to perform for my Drama GCSE. This is next level standards!
Even though they kept it fairly close to the original, they managed to put their own creative twist to it, which i found so interesting. They brought in a new character to the play – a librarian. She was such a great character. She was good friends with Matilda as she was always at the library. They introduced the idea of Matilda being a really great, dramatic story teller herself, with the librarian listening in. Throughout the play Matilda would continue to tell this made up story of hers about an acrobat and his wife, which we soon later find out to be Miss Honey’s life story. I found it very clever how they made the story telling sessions come to life – she would describe the scene and say what her characters would say in her story and at the same time, a live version of what’s happening in the story was going on behind them! Quite literally bringing the story to life 😉 .
All in all, it was a great performance and I honestly could go on about all of the different believable stage techniques they used and how clever the lighting and positioning of everything was – but I don’t want to spoil it! I really do recommend you go watch it – I think there’s still tickets to see it in the same theatre i saw it in – Cambridge theatre, Covent Garden.
Check out the trailer for it here:
That’s all from me for now 🙂
